Vacancy Investment Analyst – Ghent

V-Bio Ventures, the leading Venture Capital fund focused on the life sciences sector, is currently looking for an Investment Analyst. They work closely with Belgium-based VIB, one of the world’s premier life science institutes. V-Bio Ventures invests throughout Europe in start-up and early-stage companies with high growth potential. The focus is on technologies that provide transformational improvements in the biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, diagnostics, and agricultural sectors. Their extensive network and expertise in the sector allows them to contribute more than just capital, they aim to be part of the DNA of the new ventures that they support.

For the expansion of their team, V-Bio Ventures wants to recruit an Investment Analyst who is looking for a first-time experience in the world of venture capital. You will work under the guidance of the managing directors. Under their mentorship, you will build up great insights into the life sciences venture capital industry, and you will learn about investment decision-making in the broadest sense of the word. The role requires intense involvement in the deal process, which means you get to assist the partners in every aspect of their role. Through interacting with scientists and potential target companies, you will learn more about their business and will be able to better evaluate the potential of the individual investment opportunity. Furthermore, you will work on:

  • Networking and taking part in industry and Venture Capital events
  • Forming a view on the unmet needs and competitive environment in a very diverse set of areas in the Life Sciences sector
  • Liaise with a network of internal and external experts to correctly interpret the risks associated with potential collaborations
  • Bringing key elements to build an integrative view on the strengths and weaknesses of companies, both from a scientific and competitive point of view
  • Making clear recommendations towards the managing partners based on this information
  • Delivering on preset objectives in the areas described above
  • Taking part in deal “origination” by providing high-quality scientific support

Since V-Bio Ventures will share their knowledge on the entire investment cycle, they are looking for someone who has a natural curiosity for broadening his/her understanding of drug discovery and the world of venture capital. A general understanding of the parameters critical for the success of discovery projects (pharmacology, pharmacokinetics) is expected. This is a very entrepreneurial role and requires a strong degree of autonomy in the day-to-day work. They understand that in most cases it may be your first time, but having the urge to learn, adapt, and do is very important to them. You will need strong networking capabilities as in most cases you will need to acquire information from outside of your own knowledge sphere. Communicating clearly and quickly grasping the essentials of concepts that are outside of your comfort zone are expected in this position. Furthermore, they expect a:

  • Collaborative mindset
  • Resilient and adaptive attitude; calm and deliberate mentality under any circumstance
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • PhD/MD in Life Sciences
  • Optionally 1- or 3-years postdoctoral researcher experience
  • Broad interest in different Life Sciences areas and translational research
  • Interest (not necessarily experience) in IP protection, industrial value creation and/or finance
  • Living and working in Belgium

Next to working in an entrepreneurial role with high growth potential, the organisation offers you:

  • A challenging and versatile function within a young fund
  • An inspiring learning environment
  • A small team of knowledgeable and fun colleagues
  • Direct impact on the entire chain of deal-making
  • A two-year contract with a competitive salary package

At the end of the period you will have developed the following competencies:

  • Build financial and scientific due diligence models for valuation
  • Build startup pitch and information memorandum for VC
  • Broad understanding of the life science sector and start-up methodology
  • First-hand experience about how Venture Capital deals work from A to Z
