Vacancy Principal Scientist Fermentation – Delft


10 NOV ’21: For a rapidly growing Biotech organisation specialised in the acceleration of fermentation, we’re looking for a Principal Scientist Fermentation. This organisation develops and deploys cutting-edge fermentation technology. Its mission is to help clients to achieve cost-effective production through fermentation process optimisation. As a Principal Scientist Fermentation, you are responsible for managing the development of optimised fermentation processes for applications and ultimately commercial manufacturing for a wide range of strain-pathway-compound combinations. You will fulfill a key role by performing and directing all microbial-focused R&D activities when developing their well-known fermentation processes such as strain selection, product & pathway optimisation. This will create a robust basis of optimised fermentation conditions and scale-up.

Other tasks and responsibilities:

  • Being a team leader for a small team of scientists
  • Work closely with the Process Technology scientist and engineers to develop and scale-up robust industrial fermentation processes
  • Lead strain and fermentation process development with a view to advance the development and deployment of the technology
  • You are in contact with CRO’s and CMO’s to execute R&D and production activities
  • Analyse and report fermentation data. Drive the selection and use of appropriate data management and analytical tools
  • Working with clients and partners to co-create winning strain-process-product combinations
  • Thinking along and co-writing the company objectives
  • Participate in project teams


The perfect candidate for this role should meet the following criteria:

  • Master or Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology or equivalent background
  • At least 5 years experience in fermentation science-related roles involving R&D as well as manufacturing
  • Fluent in English
  • High-level of independence
  • Prioritisation skills and a team player
